Indoor Beac I

Please take note that rules may vary stadium to stadium. This is due to different court sizing / layouts & grades. Cannon Indoor  have their own set of rules for their own version of Beach Volleyball.  We encourage all patrons to read the rules / stadium policy, enjoy the game & show good sportsmanship at all times.

Rules vary for Pairs game play. See bottom of page for altered gameplay rules.

Game Play

A game consists of 3 x 12 minute sets. The team with the highest score at the end of  the game is declared he winner. Indivduasl set points does not effect the result.

There are no outs during play*, the ball is always live.

*On serving (which can be under or over arm), the ball cannot touch the back or side net on the full. This will result in a foul. When a foul occurs, the ball is turned over to the opposition.

The ball can be hit with any part of your body with each side having a maximum of 3 touches to get the ball over the net. While using your 3 touches the ball can hit the top net but not when the ball is hit over the middle net. This will result in a foul.

Players cannot have 2 consecutive hits* & points are only won on serve.

*Blocking the ball at net does not count as one of your 3 hits & the person who attempted the block can hit ball again.

Team Setup

Each team consists of 4 players on court. Players can have substitutes (max. of 2) which can be brought into the game only in between sets or when an injury occurs.

When serving & point is won, the server continues. When opposition loses serve & ball is turned over, players rotate in a clockwise direction prior to serving.

Serving / Team Layout

When serving, the ball cannot touch the side net or back net on the full. The server must do so from the back right corner no more than 1 metre from side net & no more then 1 metre from back net.

All players must serve. When serving if the ball fails to clear the middle net  this will result in a foul.

The team receiving the serve cannot hit the ball directly back over the net. This will result in the serve having been won by the serve. During play however (after initial return) the ball can be hit directly back over the net.

Fouls

A foul will be called when the following occurs –
  • Ball touches the sand
  • Player touches the middle net
  • Ball doesn’t clear middle net on serve
  • A team touches the ball more then 3 times prior to ball clearing the middle net
  • A player touches the ball consecutively
  • While attempting a block, a player is deemed to have reached over the net
  • A ball is blocked or hit back directly after a serve
  • Umpire calls carry (player deemed to have caught the ball)
  • A player interferes / abuses / swears at the opposition or umpire
  • Ball is served from outside the designated serving area

Semi Finals & Grand Final

While a game still consists of 3 x 12 minute sets, match results are determined by total points won over the entire match. Regardless of a team winning the first 2 sets or reaching 28 points in a set, the entire 12 minutes of each set is played.

 Umpires Decision Making

The umpires decision is final & will not change. The designated team captain can speak calmly & unbiased to the umpire after the game or between set breaks. By no means are umpires perfect, just like patrons playing the game. Therefore, if any player continually disputing umpiring decisions, intimidates, swears or physically confronts our umpires they will be given a relevant penalty in the accordance with the severity of the initial incident.

Pairs Game Play

As pairs is normally played on a full size court, gameplay and court  usage has been altered to increase skill, decision making and team work. Listed below are the variations from Pairs to Fours.

  • On each end of the court a yellow marker is run side to side of the court. It sits at the same height as the bottom of the net in the middle. When receiving, the ball may only hit the back net on or below the yellow marker for it to be valid. Any ball that hits the side nets and or above the yellow marker, while receiving, is out.

  • During the rally, players must use the maximum three touches for play to remain live when receiving then returning the ball over the net. However, when receiving the serve from the opposition, teams can use a minimum two touches to return ball over the net.

  • When serving, the ball can hit the oppositions back net and remain live providing it has made contact with the net on or below the yellow marker.
